EMPLOYMENT:
The EE Department does NOT hire students though email contact nor does the department offer financial aid. National Students can check with USF Financial Office. A graduate student does not receive a tution waiver unless they are hired on a Graduate Student Contract (salaried). If a student is hired hourly OPS (paid by the hour), they are not eligible to apply for a Tuition Waiver. Most of our students find employement during their first academic year.
NOTE: Once an international student is hired (if they do not have an American SS number) - it will take a month to six weeks or more before a first paycheck is received - even if they have received an early letter of offer. International Students (without a "letter of offer") must come prepared to support themselves as they stated they were able to do on their financial statement to the University. Again, it may take up to two months before a first pay check.
Teaching Assistant Employment: New graduate students are not eligible to be employed as a TA until they have 18 credit hours in their field. Department graduate assistants hired for grading, etc. are not eligible to be hired their first semester. After a student has completed 18 credit hours, submit a resume to the Associate Chair of the Department/TA Supervisor.
Since there are many applicants for TA positions each semester, the initial selection of whom to interview is made from the resumes that have been submitted. You will be asked to attend a personal interview ONLY if your resume indicates that you are among the MOST QUALIFIED candidates for the position that is to be filled. Therefore, it is very important that you submit a detailed, well-written TA oriented resume that includes all information which you would like to be considered when the selection is made. Those students selected will be contacted. Remember, you WILL be tested on your knowlege. International TA's must also be prepared to take the SPEAK Test or the TSE (Test of Spoken English) through ELI. Unless an international student can pass one of these tests, they are not eligible to be considered for a TA position in the EE Department. Also note that final TA appointments are NOT made until the 2nd week of the semester - after the EE Department knows their final enrollment and therefore what their TA needs will be. Please also look at the Center for Teaching Enhancement for useful resource information for Teaching Assistants. TAs may be asked to participate in their workshops. Besides English speaking skills required by international TAs, all TAs must process excellent writing skills and legible handwriting, and maintain the required graduate GPA.
Research Assistant Employment: Please do NOT email faculty but try and meet them after you arrive. They usually do not have time to answer the numerous email requests they receive for research assistants and will not hire students until they can be interviewed in person. Remember that our faculty will be preparing for the new academic semester and will be busy so they do not always have the time you may like to spend with them. Give them a resume detailing your research experience, skills, goals, etc. If faculty are interested, they will contact you. Remember, if you are called for further interviews, you WILL be tested on your skills and knowlege. You may also be asked to volunteer for a semester in a research lab. That is NO guarantee of future employment. Research faculty may wish to see how your first semester grades are, how you adjust to the experiences new students have at USF, if your research AND writing (Technical and English) skills match their needs BEFORE offering employment. Again, volunteering is not a guarantee of future employment. Our current faculty list.
General Employment Information: Plan to arrive on campus as early as possible. There is NO guarantee of employment in the EE Department or anywhere else on campus, but, your chances are better with early arrival. Do NOT limit your job search to the EE Department or the College of Engineering. Your job search plans should include the entire university complex. Good computer skills are needed throughout the campus. EE graduate students can be RAs TAs, GAs (graduate assistant employed on a graduate contract) or hourly ops workers throughout the USF system. This includes the Physical Plant, Medical School complex, Public Health, other Departments, Centers and Colleges, Library, Administration, various computer labs, etc. Be prepared to walk around campus and look. Ask other students where and how they got their job, etc. Check out the USF Career Center for part-time hourly OPS job information. Remember, OPS jobs are not eligible for a TW, but a job and a salary is better than no income at all.
NOTE: For the EE Department, all incoming new graduate students should prepare a ONE page resume and give it to the EE Graduate Program Assistant, G. B. Montgomery, listing:
