Objective: Fault tolerance is concerned with masking or recovering from the effects of faults in a digital system, once they have been detected. On-line fault detection, also known as self-checking, is often required before the fault recovery process can be started. This course will familiarize students with currently available techniques for self-checking logic design, as well as with techniques for fault tolerant system design.

Topics:

1. Basic Concepts of Reliability
2. Error- detecting Codes.
3. Self-Checking Combinational Circuit Design
4. Totally Self-checking Checker Design
5. Self-Checking State Machine Design
6. Error correction in Semiconductor Memory Systems
7. Fault-tolerant System Design
